the most secretive, thuggish, incompetent, fear mongering, sloganeering, substantially bankrupt U.S. administration of our lifetimes.
this can not be stressed enough. Our government, especially the last four and a half years, has been a borderline banana republic.
No accountability for the ruling party's misdeeds. A figurehead leader and a tight circle of aging radicals making all the decisions. a rubber-stamp legislature that sits on its hands while the Executive aggressively upsets the constitutional balance of powers. the public receives little other than propaganda and vague warnings of enemies. every dissenting opinion is smeared as unpatriotic. a government that basically operates only on the behalf of a fanatic base and the wealthiest contributors.
they scared us about Iraq and about terrorism and about gays, they wedged us all they could to sneak out just enough votes to maintain their hegemony.
and we pretty much just allowed it to happen for two election cycles in a row.
(I know it all sounds hyperbolic, but there's distinct truth in all of that.)
but now:
the house is in securely democratic hands
the senate now stands at 50 dems, 49 republicans, with virginia undecided
and Donald Rumsfeld, half of the cheney-rummy axis that steered this administration to the hard right and to its folly in Iraq, is resigning.
the voters stood up and said "No More!" to possibly the worst administration in american history. They demand accountability, answers for their disastrous policies, and a check on their borderline unconstitutional, Nixonian expansion of Presidential power.
I'm not gonna say that the democrats are Heroes, because their function was mainly just to provide an alternative. But thank God that america finally chose the alternative to a rubber-stamp.
